Washington (EFE).- A court of appeals lifted on Thursday a block ordered the day before by a federal court on many of the tariffs imposed by United States President Donald Trump on his trading partners.
The aforementioned puts the Court of International Trade’s ruling, which halted the global levies announced on Apr. 2 and previous ones against Canada, Mexico, and China on Wednesday, on hold “until further notice” while the judges review the government’s appeal motions.
In its appeal against the court’s block on its tariff policy, the istration warned that it would take the case to the Supreme Court on Friday unless the initial ruling is halted by a temporary injunction.
Although the veto issued by the Court of International Trade is currently ineffective, another ruling issued on Thursday by the federal court in the District of Columbia also blocks the application of the same tariffs.
Wednesday’s ruling came after three judges found that the president had exceeded his authority by invoking the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) to announce the preceding trade measures.
The White House insisted that the three judges on the Court of International Trade’s ruling were “blatantly wrong,” and that they abused their power in an attempt to “usurp the authority of President Trump.”
“America cannot function if President Trump, or any president for that matter, has their sensitive diplomatic or trade negotiations railroaded by activist judges,” said the White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt on Thursday at a press conference at the executive residence.
She noted that there is a “troubling and dangerous trend of unelected judges inserting themselves into the presidential decision-making process,” referring to court blockades across the country against controversial measures introduced by Trump in his first months in office.
The spokeswoman warned countries in trade negotiations with Washington that the president reserves other tariff powers to ensure that US interests are protected worldwide. EFE
