Tbilisi/Baku, Feb 13 (EFE).- At least four Armenian soldiers were killed Tuesday after Azerbaijan attacked Armenian positions in the border region of Nerkin Hand, according to the Armenian Ministry of Defense.
According to the military statement, published by the official Armenian agency Armenpress, on Tuesday morning, Azerbaijani forces opened fire on Armenian Army positions in Nerkin Hand, in the east of the country.
The Azerbaijani Border Guard confirmed the attack, which it called a “revenge operation” in response to an Armenian provocation on Monday which, according to Baku, wounded one Azerbaijani soldier.
Azerbaijan warned that it will respond even more firmly to any actions aimed at aggravating the operational situation on the border.
The Armenian Defense Ministry denied that its troops had opened fire on Azerbaijani positions on Monday.
Armenian and Baku authorities accuse each other of torpedoing the normalization of bilateral relations amid peace talks after the war for the control of the region of Nagorno-Karabakh.
Azerbaijan retook Nagorno-Karabakh last year after the region had been held by ethnic Armenians since the dissolution of the Soviet Union in the early 90s. EFE
