Trump accepts presidential nomination, promises ‘four greatest years’ in US history

Milwaukee, US, July 18 (EFE).- Former United States President Donald Trump on Thursday accepted the nomination of the Republican party as the presidential candidate, and claimed that his victory will ensure the country’s four greatest years in its history.

“I stand before you this evening with a message of confidence, strength, and hope. Four months from now, we will have an incredible victory, and we will begin the four greatest years in the history of our country,” Trump said, in his first major address after the assassination attempt.

“I am running to be president for ALL of America, not half of America, because there is no victory in winning for half of America,” said the former president, with a bandaged right ear.

Trump spoke at the closing ceremony of the Republican National Convention, which opened Monday in Milwaukee and confirmed his candidacy and that of his running mate, Ohio Senator JD Vance.

The New York tycoon arrived in the city a day after surviving an assassination attempt on Saturday in Butler, Pennsylvania.

“Despite such a heinous attack, we unite this evening more determined than ever. Our resolve is unbroken, and our purpose is unchanged–to deliver a government that serves the American People,” Trump said.

“Nothing will stop me in this mission. Because our vision is righteous and our cause is pure. No matter what obstacle comes our way: we will not break. We will not bend. We will not back down. And I will never stop fighting for you,” he added.

He also spoke about the attempt on his life, describing it as “too painful to tell.”

“The amazing thing is that prior to the shot, if I had NOT moved my head at the very last instant, the assassin’s bullet would have perfectly hit its mark, and I would not be with you tonight,” Trump said. “I stand before you in this arena only by the grace of almighty God.”

In his speech, Trump barely mentioned the current president, Joe Biden, or his vice president, Kamala Harris, although he did not skimp on criticism of Democratic party.

“We must not criminalize dissent or demonize political disagreement. In that spirit, the Democrat Party should immediately stop weaponizing the Justice System and labeling their political opponent as an enemy of democracy,” he said.

There were also many references to the issue of illegal immigrants, as Trump promised to close the border with Mexico on the first day of his hypothetical second term, while continuing with his strong anti-immigration rhetoric he is known for.

In his speech, lasting over an hour and a half, Trump also accused the Biden istration of “destroying” Social Security and assured that his government will end inflation.

On Saturday Trump and Vance are scheduled to hold their first t rally in Michigan, a state that the Republican won in 2016 and Biden in 2020. EFE
