German chancellor pledges additional aid in surprise visit to Kyiv

Kyiv, Dec 2 (EFE).- German Chancellor Olaf Scholz reaffirmed his government’s for Ukraine against the Russian invasion in a surprise visit to Kyiv on Monday.

“Ukraine can rely on – we say what we do. And we do what we say. To make it clear again I traveled to Kyiv tonight: by train through a country that has been defending itself against the Russian war of aggression for over 1,000 days,” Scholz wrote on X.

In a statement sent to EFE by his press office, the German chancellor announced that he would meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and announce a new military aid package that would arrive in Ukraine in December.

This is Scholz’s second visit to Ukraine since Russia’s military invasion of Ukraine.

On his first visit, which took place on Jun. 16, 2022, the German chancellor traveled to Kyiv accompanied by French President Emmanuel Macron, Romanian President Klaus Iohannis, and then Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi.

Scholz has arrived in Kyiv amid escalating tensions and intense air strikes between the two sides on Ukrainian territory, and ’s election campaign in the run-up to early elections on Feb. 23, 2025, in which Berlin’s Ukraine policy is one of the central issues.

Scholz’s former partners in government, ’s Social Democrats, Greens, and Liberals, as well as the Conservatives, are united in their for Ukraine.

While Chancellor Olaf Scholz continues to refuse to send long-range Taurus cruise missiles to Kyiv, conservative leader Friedrich Merz has announced that he will send such weapons if he becomes head of government.EFE
