Miami, Jan 9 (EFE).- United States President-elect Donald Trump, said Thursday his team is arranging a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
“He wants to meet, and we are setting it up,” Trump said in an address before the cameras at his residence in Mar-a-Lago, Florida, after meeting with Republican governors.
“President Putin wants to meet. He has said that even publicly and we have to get that war over with. That’s a bloody mess,” said Trump, who in 11 days will assume power for the second time in the US, in reference to the war in Ukraine.
Trump, who spoke Thursday night from his West Palm Beach mansion after attending the state funeral of former President Jimmy Carter, also said that his team is speaking with Chinese President Xi Jinping and that he has spoken with many world leaders, but that he has not yet spoken with Putin.
The president-elect has promised to end the war in Ukraine when he takes power on January 20 and added that he would achieve a ceasefire and bring Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to the negotiating table.
Democrats have criticized Trump in the past for showing sympathy for Putin and not having done enough to disassociate himself from and investigate the work of some of his collaborators with Russia to interfere and affect the results of the 2016 elections, where he beat Hillary Clinton. EFE
