At least 90 dead in Gaza since Hamas-Israel ceasefire deal

Jerusalem, Jan 17 (EFE).- At least 90 people have been killed in the Gaza Strip by Israeli Army attacks since the ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas was announced earlier this week in Qatar, according to medical sources cited Friday by Palestinian news agency Wafa.

Despite the Wednesday agreement, Israel bombed in the last few hours several homes in northeast Gaza City, causing the death of “several people,” said Wafa, adding that rescue teams and ambulances have not yet been able to reach the site to evacuate the victims.

In earlier attacks, three Palestinians were killed and an unknown number wounded in a bombing in Gaza City, the agency said.

Israeli air forces also continued their bombings in the town of Yabalia, at the northern end of the enclave, which has been under siege for more than 100 days, as well as in the Nuseirat camp in the center of the Strip, according to Wafa.

In a statement released Thursday afternoon, Israel said its air force had launched strikes “against approximately 50 terrorist targets throughout the Gaza Strip,” including Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad militants.

The armed forces said that when they attacked civilian infrastructure in the enclave they took preventive measures to avoid harming civilians and blamed Hamas for using the population as human shields.

The first phase of the ceasefire agreement, which the Israeli government has not yet approved but would in principle come into force Sunday, provides for a period of 42 days in which 33 hostages would be released.

Of the 251 kidnapped on Oct. 7, 2023, 94 remain in Gaza and the Israeli authorities estimate that at least 34 are dead.

Since Israel launched its retaliation on the Strip that same day, which has already lasted more than 15 months, more than 46,700 Palestinians have lost their lives in its attacks and more than 110,000 have been injured. EFE
