Russia links Ukraine’s NATO bid to peace talks viability

Moscow, Jan 24 (EFE).- Ukraine must give up its NATO hip ambitions to resolve the ongoing conflict that began in February 2022, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Glushko said in Friday.

“For us, this [Ukraine’s NATO bid renunciation] is one of the key elements for a possible agreement on the conflict in Ukraine, tied directly to its root causes,” Glushko told the Rossiya-24 state television channel.

He argued that Ukraine’s potential NATO accession blocks the path to peace and hinders efforts to build a broader security framework.

“We will push for binding international legal guarantees to ensure Ukraine cannot NATO in any capacity and demand this policy be adopted by the alliance itself,” he said.

Glushko criticized NATO’s 2008 Bucharest summit decision to back Ukraine and Georgia’s future hip, calling it “catastrophic for European security.”

“If this commitment is not withdrawn, it will perpetuate an unacceptable ambiguity as we work towards a viable, lasting solution to the Ukraine conflict,” he added.

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump said Thursday that he was ready to meet “immediately” with Russian President Vladimir Putin to negotiate a peace agreement in Ukraine. EFE
