Damascus, Jan 29 (EFE). – The leader of the Syrian revolution that toppled the regime of Bashar al-Assad in December and head of the de facto government, Ahmed al-Sharaa, was named on Wednesday as the country’s president during the transitional period, according to Syrian television channel SyriaTV.
Sharaa was appointed “as the country’s president in the transitional phase,” the state-run channel said, quoting military official Hassan Abdel Ghani after a meeting of the various military factions.
The colonel added that the appointment “authorizes the president of the republic to form an interim legislative council (…) until a permanent constitution for the country is decided.”
Abdelgani also announced the cancellation of the 2012 constitution, the suspension of all special laws, and the dissolution of the assembly formed during the ousted regime. EFE
