Ukrainian drone attack causes fire in Russian oil refinery

Moscow, Feb 3 (EFE).- A Ukrainian drone attack caused a fire last weekend in the territory of an oil refinery located in the Volgograd region, its governor reported Monday.

“As a result of the fall of fragments (of a drone) in the territory of the refinery, local fires broke out, which were quickly controlled,” Andrei Bocharov said about the Sunday night attack, as quoted by his press office, adding that it was a “massive attack with fixed-wing drones.”

“Most of the drones were intercepted and neutralized. There were no casualties,” he said.

The Russian defense ministry said anti-aircraft defenses shot down 70 Ukrainian drones over six regions of the country, 25 of them in Volgograd, which is more than 130 kilometers from the closest point of the Ukrainian border.

According to a military report, published on Telegram, the other unmanned aircraft destroyed were shot over the regions of Rostov, Astrakhan, Voronezh, Belgorod and Kursk.

By order of the authorities, several airports in southern Russia temporarily suspended their operations.

Ukraine, which faces a successful offensive by Russian troops in the Donbas, has intensified drone attacks against Russian territory in recent weeks. EFE
