Jerusalem (EFE).- The Israel Defense Forces launched an air strike in the central Gaza Strip on Thursday, despite the ceasefire, after detecting the launch of a rocket that failed to reach Israeli territory.
In a statement, the IDF confirmed it had hit the launch site.
The army is “committed to the full implementation of the of the agreement for the release of the hostages,” the IDF said.
According to the official Palestinian news agency Wafa and Israeli reports a 15 year old was killed during the airstrike.
A video of the incident released by Israel shows the rocket taking off over the Strip and almost immediately crashing into the enclave a short distance away.
In a separate event on Thursday, a 14 year old was also killed in a refugee camp by unexploded Israeli ordnance.
The United Nations has already warned that 5-10% of the explosives dropped on Gaza during the last 15 months of war have failed to detonate, posing a deadly danger, especially now that thousands of people are returning to their neighborhoods after the ceasefire took effect.
Luke Irving, Chief of the UN Mine Action Programme (UNMAS) in the occupied Palestinian territories, said on Jan. 30 that at least 92 people have been killed or injured by explosive ordnance since October 2023.
Since the beginning of the truce in the enclave, the Israeli army has killed around 30 Palestinians, according to the Gaza Health Ministry.
At least 48,239 people have been killed and more than 111,000 injured in Israeli attacks on the enclave since the war began in October 2023, according to health officials in Gaza Strip. EFE
