Jerusalem, Feb 16 (EFE).– A shipment of heavy bombs from the United States, previously halted by the government of then President Joe Biden, has arrived in Israel by sea, the defense ministry said on Sunday.
The shipment included an unspecified number of MK-84 bombs, each weighing 900 kilograms, which were unloaded at the port of Ashdod and transported to Israeli air bases on dozens of trucks, according to the ministry’s statement.
“The munitions shipment that arrived in Israel tonight, released by the Trump istration, represents a significant asset for the Air Force and the IDF and serves as further evidence of the strong alliance between Israel and the United States,” Defense Minister Israel Katz said in a statement.
On Jan. 25, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu thanked Trump for fulfilling his promise to provide Israel with “the tools it needs to defend itself” after lifting the suspension of a shipment of 1,800 MK-84 bombs.
While Biden has ed Israel’s offensive in Gaza, which has resulted in more than 48,000 deaths, mostly women and children, and continued supplying weaponry, he paused the shipment of these powerful bombs in May 2024, fearing their use in densely populated areas of Rafah in southern Gaza following Israel’s military incursion there.
According to ministry data, since the start of the Gaza war in October 2023, more than 76,000 tons of military equipment have reached Israel via 678 planes and 129 ships, the vast majority from the United States. EFE
