Khartoum, (EFE).- Sudan’s Foreign Ministry recalled its ambassador to Kenya for consultations on Thursday to protest Nairobi’s hosting of the paramilitary Rapid Forces (RSF), which have claimed its intentions to establish a parallel government.
“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Thursday summoned Sudan’s ambassador to Kenya, Kamal Jubara, for consultations, in protest against Kenya hosting meetings of rebel militia and its allies in another hostile move against Sudan,” the Sudanese ministry said in a brief statement quoted by the official news agency SUNA.
Sudan accused Kenya on Wednesday of ing the rebel group after the RSF, which has been at war with the army since 2023, said at a high-profile event in Nairobi this week that they would sign a founding charter that would lead to the formation of a “peace and unity government.”
In an earlier statement, Sudan’s foreign ministry accused Kenyan President William Ruto of taking a “disgraceful position by embracing and encouraging a conspiracy” that violates Sudan’s sovereignty.
The Kenyan government denied this and reaffirmed its commitment to ing a peace process in Sudan, which has been in the midst of a war between the regular army and paramilitaries since mid-April 2023.
Nairobi also argued that the RSF’s act of presenting a roap aligned with Kenya’s role in the peace negotiations, which requires it to provide impartial platforms for the parties to the conflict to seek solutions.
The RSF’s announcement came after the Sudanese army reported on Monday that its troops were advancing north of Khartoum, tightening the siege on rebels after taking control of the strategic town of Wad Madani in the center of the country in early January.
The war in Sudan has left tens of thousands dead and forced some 12 million people to flee their homes, more than 3 million to other countries, making the country the worst displacement crisis on the planet, according to the United Nations. EFE
