Toronto, Mar 6 (EFE).- Canada will not remove the tariffs it imposed on the United States earlier this week until Washington fully cancels its own trade duties, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Thursday.
Speaking at a press conference, Trudeau emphasized that Canada “will not suspend its tariffs simply because the Americans made a change yesterday.”
His remarks came a day after the US government announced a temporary one-month suspension of the 25 percent tariffs it imposed on Tuesday on trade with Canada and Mexico in the automotive sector.
Trudeau reiterated that Canada seeks the complete removal of tariffs but, as long as they remain in place, his government will focus on minimizing their impact on the Canadian economy and citizens.

“I can confirm that for the foreseeable future, we will remain in a trade war launched by the United States. Canadians must continue buying Canadian products and ing each other,” he warned.
“Canada will stand firm, and as long as these tariffs are in place, we will respond forcefully.”
Trudeau also acknowledged that his 50-minute phone call with Trump the previous day was “lively” but declined to confirm reports from US media that both leaders used foul language.
“When I speak with Donald on the phone, let’s just say it’s always interesting. And this one was, I suppose, lively. But also constructive,” he said, adding that he would not disclose details except to note that “there were moments when different approaches and tones were used.” EFE
