Washington, Apr 7 (EFE). – United States President Donald Trump threatened to impose an additional 50% tariff on China on Monday if Beijing does not withdraw the levies it imposed on US products in response to Trump’s tariff announcement.
“If China does not withdraw its 34% increase above their already long-term trading abuses by tomorrow, April 8th, 2025, the United States will impose ADDITIONAL Tariffs on China of 50%, effective April 9th,” Trump stated on his social media platform Truth Social.
“All talks with China concerning their requested meetings with us will be terminated! Negotiations with other countries, which have also requested meetings, will begin taking place immediately,” he added.
China imposed 34% tariffs on the United States after Trump unleashed a widespread trade war on Apr. 2, announcing 10% minimum tariffs on most countries and, in some cases higher ones, such as China’s 34%.
Considering previous levies, Trump has imposed around 54% tariffs on China. If the new threatened levies go into effect, the Asian country could face a 104% tariff.
On Monday, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian warned that “pressure and threats are not the way to deal with China.”
Trump has shown himself open to negotiating with any country to reduce the US trade deficit; however, international analysts have increasingly warned in recent days that the US president’s policy could end up causing a global recession. EFE
