5 Russian mountaineers die on Dhaulagiri climb in Nepal

Moscow, Oct 8 (EFE).– Five Russian climbers have died while attempting to scale Dhaulagiri, the seventh-highest mountain in the world, standing at 8,167 meters, according to a Russian mountaineering community representative on Tuesday.

“The boys have been found. They all died when the rope fell,” wrote climber Anna Piunova on her Facebook page, adding that the group initially consisted of six climbers.

One of them, identified as Valeri Shamalo, became ill during the climb and returned to the camp at 6,100 meters, from where he was later evacuated to a hospital by helicopter.

According to the official TASS news agency, the Russian embassy in Nepal confirmed it had been informed of the climbers’ deaths, having lost communication with the group on Sunday, the day they began their ascent.

Nepal is home to eight of the 14 highest peaks in the world including Mount Everest, standing tall at 8,848 metres, Kanchanjunga Region (8598 metres), and the seventh-ranked Dhaulagiri(8,167 metres).

Dhaulagiri’s peak was first scaled in 1960 by a Swiss-Austrian team and has since been climbed by hundreds of people. EFE
